FIZ Karlsruhe’s new strategy makes significant progress

04. Dezember 2006

New, function-oriented organizational structure / streamlined product portfolio / focus on STN International and E-Science services / innovative products for adding value

Karlsruhe / London - November 2006 –Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, President and CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe, step by step turns the company from a traditional database provider into a sustainable service partner for information transfer and knowledge management. FIZ Karlsruhe positions itself as a neutral platform for offers and solutions provided by different, competing players on the market. This USP of being “neutral” is acknowledged and highly appreciated by users and customers. “We strengthen our core business and evolve out of our core competencies. In accordance with our USP, we aim at providing our customers with a neutral, stable organizational and technical basis, upon which numerous applications for business and science can be built. During the last 12 months we have made a decisive step towards our new strategic orientation - both from an organizational point of view and with respect to our product portfolio“, explained Mrs. Brünger-Weilandt on the occasion of the Online Information Exhibition 2006 to be held from November 28 - 30 at London’s Olympia exhibition center. FIZ Karlsruhe will present its products and services together with the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) at their stand no. 512/514 (Grand Hall). For many years, CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe have been jointly operating the online service STN International, which will be one of the main things to be presented by FIZ Karlsruhe at the exhibition.

STN International: focussed on value-add and tools

STN International is FIZ Karlsruhe’s largest business area. The offer is continuously complemented with new databases; existing databases are enhanced. One of the main targets of the product development is to generate value-add from databases. New, efficient functions and an improved software open up new possibilities of multi-layered linking and strategic analysis of information. Some months ago, STN International’s powerful analysis and visualization tool STN AnaVist has been enhanced with a new tool enabling patent information specialists to share results from STN AnaVist (interactive results lists, graphics and images) with colleagues and managers. This improvement was realized by FIZ Karlsruhe and CAS at the suggestion of patent specialists using this software tool.

DWPI with original data from patent authorities

Content and technology of the renowned patent file Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) have been revised, and the file has been reloaded on STN International. For the first time, original data from the patent authorities have been integrated in the database, whose records now have a new, two-part structure: The Invention level comprises traditional DWPI content, such as patent family and enhanced abstracts. The Members level provides new additional information from each of the publications listed in the patent family portion of the patent record. At present, DWPI contains about 15 million records. New bio sequence file

A new biosequence file will be loaded: Under the name of USGENE,  FIZ Karlsruhe and the American database producer SequenceBase Corporation will launch the USPTO Genetic Sequence Database on STN International. USGENE offers three advanced sequence searching methods: NCBI BLAST®, the FastA-based GETSIM, and GETSEQ for fragment or motif sequence queries. These al gorithms have already been available for other sequence databases on STN International.

New informatics portal with semantic tools

The most important novelty in FIZ Karlsruhe’s business area “Databases and Information Services“ was the launch of the new informatics portal io-port.net in 2006. It pools information from the four large computer science databases CCSB, CompuScience, DBLP and LEABiB under one central interface. This offer for computer scientists is unique in the world. In addition to the traditional search functions, new semantic tools support the information retrieval.

FIZ AutoDoc has been optimized

The user interaction of FIZ Karlsruhe’s document broker service FIZ AutoDoc has been optimized with new menu, display, and ordering options. Additional ordering masks for patent documents and other literature are now available. Original documents can be downloaded in pay-per-view mode directly from selected publishers.

FIZ AutoDoc can be used as a stand-alone web service, or accessed directly from a search session in an STN database (STN Full-Text Solution). Customized options for integrating FIZ AutoDoc into corporate intranets and portals are also available. In addition to the automatic ordering procedure, orders can, upon request, be processed by the FIZ AutoDoc service staff, e.g., if the required document is not available with conventional suppliers or if the bibliographical data are incomplete.

Business field “E-Science” is shaping up

E-Science, FIZ Karlsruhe’s new field of business and its second strategic pillar, is shaping up. E-Science is short for "enhanced science" – i.e., a scientific discipline the efficiency of which can be enhanced by new technologies. These improvements will be enabled by the technological possibilities of the next generation of information technology and the internet (Web 2.0).

In successful collaboration, FIZ Karlsruhe and the Max Planck Society (MPG) are realizing the R&D project eSciDoc, with the aim to establish an integrated information, communication and publishing platform for web-based scientific work and to test it in multidisciplinary applications. Thus, FIZ Karlsruhe as one of the project partners plays an important role in the German government’s E-Science Initiative.

One of FIZ Karlsruhe’s tasks in this project is to develop and test methods of applying standardized, component-oriented software technologies in large, web-based interactive information systems.
