Latest Manual Code Revision goes live on Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI)

The DWPI^SM manual coding system annual revision has now been completed and is being used by the editorial teams to code records appearing in the database from DWPI Update 201301 onward. The editorial team consistently applies DWPI manual codes to new inventions across all 47 authorities (soon to be increasing) covered in the database. Since the coding highlights the novel technical aspects of the invention as well as the application(s), it is extremely useful to improve the precision and recall of searches and the subsequent analysis of result sets.

As with previous revisions, the coding has been updated to:

• Reflect changes in technology

• Take into account suggestions for improvements

• Enhance code descriptions and scope notes to improve the consistency of code application by the editorial teams and understanding of what each code covers.

In total, 235 changes have been made to the manual coding system and scope notes. Among them are 101 new codes. These changes include the following:

• B04-Q and C04-Q codes for Drug Conjugates

• Several B14 and C14 codes for combating resistant micro-organisms, weeds and pests

• X12-H08 for electrical transmission ‘Smart’ grids.

• Subdivisions of W03-A08E7 for enhanced treatment of head-mounted display technology

• Subdivisions of W04-E30 for audio and video recording and playback devices

The STN online thesaurus has already been updated to reflect the improvements.

The Coding Manuals and reference guides on the Thomson Reuters homepage have all been updated to include the changes. These resources are available through:

• Updated EPI Manual Code user guides 

• DWPI Classification Manual

INPADOC: The new Cooperative Patent Classification is now available

The Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) is a new patent classification system jointly developed and maintained by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This bilateral classification system will enter into force on the first of January 2013 and will replace the European patent classifications ECLA and ICO and also the US national patent classification USPC.

The CPC is an IPC-based classification system with about 250.000 subdivisions comprising the former ECLA- and ICO-codes plus an expanded scheme for business methods (G06Q) and special collections from the US patent classification.

From week 47/2012 onwards, CPC data are available for new and updated records of the INPADOC databases. Users have full access to all details of the CPC data including CPC codes and attributes. A CPC thesaurus feature supports classification searching, helping users to identify relevant codes and searching the hierarchy of the codes.

DWPI Country Coverage Update - Changes to Gulf Co-operation (GC) Kind Codes

As a result of customer feedback, the kind code for Gulf Cooperation Council patents in DWPI has been changed from B to A to reflect that this is the first stage of publication for records filed through this patent office. 

From update 201260 onwards, all new GC patents have the kind code A, with backfile corrections subsequently appearing to change the kind code of records already in DWPI.

DWPI users are encouraged to review any current alerts or search strategies to ensure the correct patent kind is being searched.

About the Gulf Co-operation Council Patent Coverage

The member states of the GCC are: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The GCC does not form part of the Patent Co-operation Treaty (PCT) and is not a signatory to the Paris Convention, but it does conform to the priority rules of the Convention, meaning that a GCC application can claim priority from a prior Convention application.

A patent granted under the GCC is enforceable across all GCC states, with a 20 year term of protection from date of filing applying in each of the member territories (compared to a 15 year term of protection granted under individual national patent legislation). It is possible to file in one or more GCC states and also the central GCC Patent Office simultaneously.

DWPI coverage commenced with the first patent published on 29 June 2004.

Reload of AGRICOLA – Effect on SDIs, Manual Profiles and Saved Answers

AGRICOLA was reloaded with enhancements on November 18, 2012. Key
customer impacts are as follows:

- The monthly SDI for November used the reloaded version of the
   database.
- Historical entry dates are only available for 2012.
- SDIs and saved queries remained available after the reload.

Because the accession number format has changed with the reload

- duplicate history for AGRICOLA SDIs was deleted.
- previously saved single file answer sets in the AGRICOLA file are
  no longer valid and should be deleted by the user.
- previously saved multi-file answer sets with AGRICOLA answers are
  still valid for the other files but displays of the AGRICOLA
  portion should not be done.

The reloaded AGRICOLA database has many enhancements, including
the simultaneous left and right truncation (SLART) and the Numeric 
Property search feature (see HELP NPS).

Reload of IMSPATENTS – Effect on SDIs, Manual Profiles and Saved Answers

IMSPATENTS was reloaded with enhancements on November 18, 2012.
The reloaded IMSPATENTS has many enhancements, including the
comprehensive standardization of patent numbers. Rarely used
display formats were removed.

Enhanced CASREACT^® Coverage – A New Source of Prior Art

Beginning in December, CAS will enhance CASREACT database coverage with the addition of reactions from nearly 900 dissertations published in the Selected Organic Reaction Database (SORD) between 1961-2009.

Improve Structure Searching in CAS REGISTRY

Structure searching explores the more than 70 million unique organic and inorganic chemical substances, such as alloys, coordination compounds, minerals, mixtures, polymers and salts, and more than 64 million sequences in the CAS REGISTRY database, the gold standard for chemical information. This month’s example is Adding Screens to Improve Structure Searching in CAS REGISTRY Database, which helps modify a substance search when the default sample search retrieves incomplete full-file projections on STN.

Extracting Patent numbers from ReaxysFile documents

ReaxysFile includes valuable property information on substances from patent documents (for more information click here). Now patent numbers can be extracted from these substance records with SELECT PN or TRANSFER PN. If too many search terms are generated, consider to turn off  SET POSTINGS.

FSEARCH to Find Related Patent Records

The FSEARCH command may be used to find additional records that share related patent numbers.

FSEARCH may be used to search:

1. Patents, applications, or priority numbers
2. L-numbers containing patent records

The FSEARCH command

1. Selects patents, applications and priority numbers from the original L-number
2. Searches selected numbers to find additional answers
3. Repeats these steps until no new answers are obtained for two consecutive iterations

**Consider using the HCAplus database because a large number of search terms may potentially be generated during the FSEARCH process.

CAS Registers 70 Millionth Substance Just 18 Months after Reaching 60 Millionth Milestone

Patents from Asian countries continue to be the a leading source of chemistry disclosures

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), the world's authority for chemical information, announced a major milestone for the CAS REGISTRY^SM, the largest collection of publicly disclosed chemical substance information. CAS scientists registered the 70 millionth substance from a patent application submitted to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO).

The 70 millionth substance is a potential T-type calcium channel blocker discovered at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), a multidisciplinary research institute in Seoul, South Korea. Assigned CAS Registry Number^® 1411769-41-9, the substance is one of several pyrazolyl-piperazine compounds disclosed in the patent application published by KIPO on November 14, 2012. This molecule may be useful in the treatment of epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, dementia and other conditions.

New SDI STANDARD Command Streamlines SDI Set-ups

Streamline SDI set up with the new STN command, SDI STANDARD, effective December 9, 2012. The SDI STANDARD command:

•  Increases efficiency by reducing the number of questions to set up an SDI

• Works with single file and multifile SDIs, including SDI packages

• Accounts for SDI set-up best practices

• Maintains flexibility with ability to customize settings using SDI EDIT

• Reduces STN MAIL charges by changing the default Notifications setting to NO (do not send notifications) from YES

Other recent SDI improvements on STN include:

•  Weekly delivery of SDI packages RSS delivery of SDI alerts

•  Hit Term highlighting in RSS-delivered SDI results

STN Viewer Now Supports Japanese Full-text Patents from JPFULL

Effective November 18, 2012, you can import records from JPFULL, the new Japanese full-text patent database on STN, into STN Viewer. STN Viewer enables customers to manage and evaluate full-text patent documents from STN answer sets. In addition to JPFULL, you can also import records into STN Viewer from the following full-text patent databases on STN:
